Weaver falls in U.S. Amateur
    Hokie golfer ousted in opening round of match play

    CHASKA, Minn. - Virginia Tech golfer Drew Weaver lost to Oliver Fisher, 3 & 2, in the opening round of match play at the 2006 United States Amateur Championship at the Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minn., on Wednesday afternoon.

    Weaver, a rising sophomore from High Point, N.C., was all square in the match following the 13th hole, but lost each of the next three holes to fall 3 & 2. He had advanced to match play after shooting a 78-69=147 in the two rounds of stroke play.

    This was Weaver's second appearance in the U.S. Amateur. He was the youngest competitor (age 16) at the 2003 U.S. Amateur at the Oakmont Cuntry Club in Oakmont, Pa. He also advanced to match play and finished 17th at the 2004 U.S. Junior Amateur at The Olympic Club in San Francisco.
