Golf season opens at Inverness
Top field to participate in Toledo event
September 10, 2006 Blacksburg, Va. - Virginia Tech opens the 2006-07 golf schedule at the Inverness Intercollegiate Invitational at the Inverness Club in Toledo, Ohio on Sept. 11-12. The Hokies line-up for the season-opening event will feature 2006 U.S. Amateur participants at the first two spots, redshirt freshman Matt Boyd (Sugar Land, Tex.) and sophomore Drew Weaver (High Point, N.C.). Redshirt sophomore Will Oldham (Spartanburg, S.C.) will play in the third position and juniors Nick MacDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe) and Chad Fultz (Staunton, Va.) will play at four and five. Boyd and Oldham both redshirted the 2005-06 season. The Inverness Club, a Donald Ross design, is one of the most storied venues in American golf history. The club has hosted four U.S. Opens, two PGA Championships, a U.S. Amateur and a U.S. Senior Open and is the site of the 2009 NCAA Championship. The 15-team national field includes 2006 NCAA runner-up Florida and sixth place finisher and 2005 champion Georgia. Three mores school that finished in the top 20 of the 2006 NCAA Championship, Texas A&M, Coastal Carolina and UNLV, will also compete in the event. In all, 11 of the 15 schools in the Invitational competed in last year's NCAA Regionals. The Hokies and Florida State are the only ACC schools in the event. Weaver and Boyd both qualified for the U.S. Amateur in Chaska, Minn., this summer and Weaver advanced through stroke play before falling in the first round of match play. The Hokies finished ninth in the 2006 Atlantic Coast Conference Men's Golf Championship at the Old North State Golf Club in Baden Lake, N.C. in April. 2006 Inverness Intercollegiate Invitational Field: Toledo, Coastal Carolina, Florida, Florida State, Georgia, Illinois, Kent State, Michigan State, Nebraska, New Mexico, Southern Cal, Texas A&M, TCU, UNLV, Virginia Tech.
