Hokies finish sixth at Duke

October 9, 2006 DURHAM, N.C. -- Virginia Tech shot a three-round total of 879 and finished in sixth place at the Coca-Cola Duke Golf Classic at the 7,105-yard, par-72 Duke University Golf Club in Durham, N.C., on Monday afternoon. Sophomore Drew Weaver (High Point, N.C.) led the Hokies with a three-round total of three-under-par 213. He tied for fourth overall. Dustin Johnson of Coastal Carolina took medalist honors with a total of seven-under-par 137, defeating David Holzworth of North Carolina by one stroke. Weaver shot a three-under-par 69 in the final round and finished five strokes behind Johnson. Redshirt sophomore Will Oldham (Spartanburg, S.C.) tied for 28th at 222. Junior Nick MacDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe) and redshirt freshman Matt Boyd (Sugar Land, Tex.) tied for 38th at 224 and senior Carl Wakely (Cardiff, Wales) tied for 60th at 230. Junior Jurrian van der Vaart (Almelo, The Netherlands) competed in the event as an individual and tied for 18th at 219. Second-round leader Coastal Carolina won the event with a total of 13-under-par 851 and defeated runner-up North Carolina by 13 strokes. Host and defending champion Duke finished third at 869 and VCU and ODU tied for fourth at 875, four strokes ahead of the Hokies. UNC Greensboro finished seventh at 889, Charlotte was seventh at 890, Florida Southern was ninth at 893 and Ohio State was 10th at 895. Maryland was 11th at 896, Houston was 12th at 900, UNC Wilmington was 13th at 901, Jacksonville was 14th at 903 and Furman finished 15th at 908. The Hokies finished the first round on Sunday in fourth place at 292 and improved two strokes to shoot 290 in the afternoon's second round. Tech shot a 297 in Monday's final round. The Duke course hosted the 2001 NCAA Championship, where Tech finished eighth. The Hokies finished 11th at the Duke Golf Classic in 2005. The Hokies return to action this weekend, Oct. 14 and 15, as they compete in the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate at the Ridges at the Ridges Golf and Country Club in Jonesborough, Tenn.
