Hokies finish second at Palmetto

March 13, 2007 AIKEN, S.C. - Virginia Tech shot a three-round total of 867 and finished in second place at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate at the par 70, 6,565-yard Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, S.C. on Tuesday afternoon. The Hokies led after the first two rounds, but shot a final round 294 to finish second. Host USC Aiken, three-time defending NCAA Division II national champions, won the event with a three-round total of 861 after a final-round 280. Junior Nick MacDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe) shot a three-round total of one-over-par 211 and finished in third place. USC Aiken's Roberto Diaz shot a final round three-under-par 67 on route to his 208 and medalist honors. Senior Ryan Sypniewski (Radford, Va.) tied for 16th at 219 and junior Jurrian van der Vaart (Almelo, the Netherlands) tied for 18th at 220. Redshirt freshman Matt Boyd (Sugar Land, Texas) tied for 31st place at 223 and sophomore Drew Weaver (High Point, N.C.) shot 224 and tied for 35th place. MacDonald and Sypniewski each shot final round even-par 70s for the Hokies Following the Pacers and the Hokies, Nebraska was third at 872, the College of Charleston was fourth at 875 and St. John's was fifth at 881. East Carolina was sixth at 883, VCU was seventh at 884, Elon was ninth at 886 and Furman was tenth at 897. Penn State was 11th at 898, Belmont Abbey was 12th at 900, Davidson was 13th at 901, Presbyterian was 14th at 902 and Francis Marion finished 15th at 904. Virginia Tech will return to action on March 23-25 at the Furman Intercollegiate, in Greenville, S.C.
