Hokies finish ninth at Augusta
    Weaver, MacDonald tie for 12th individually

    EVANS, Ga. - Virginia Tech shot a final round two-under-par 286 and finished in ninth place at the Administaff/Augusta State Invitational at the 7,301-yard, par-72 Champions Retreat Golf Club in Evans, Ga. on Sunday afternoon. The Hokies finished with a three-round total of 872.

    Sophomore Drew Weaver (High Point, N.C.) and junior Nick MacDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe) each finished with a three-day total of 215 and tied for 12th place. Dustin Johnson of Coastal Carolina captured medalist honors at 12-under-par 204 after shooting 68 in all three rounds. MacDonald had the Hokies' best round of the day with a three-under-par 69.

    Junior Jurrian van der Vaart (Almelo, the Netherlands) tied for 41st place at 220. Senior Ryan Sypniewski (Radford, Va.) tied for 65th place at 224 and redshirt freshman Matt Boyd (Sugar Land, Texas) is tied for 76th at 226.

    Coastal Carolina shot a final-round 284 and won team honors with a three-round total of 853, edging out first and second round leader North Carolina by one stroke. Georgia State was third at 856, South Carolina was fourth at 861, and Tennessee was fifth at 863. East Tennessee State shot the best round of the day, a ten-under-par 278 and finished in sixth place at 864. Host Augusta State and North Florida tied for seventh place at 869, three strokes ahead of the Hokies. Clemson was 10th at 874, North Carolina State and Houston tied for 11th at 875, Virginia was 13th at 877, Auburn was 14th at 878 and USC-Aiken and Georgia Southern tied for 15th at 881. Notre Dame was 17th at 884 and Minnesota was 18th at 888.

    Ten of the nation's top 31 teams, according to the most recent rankings from Golfweek magazine, competed in this event. Every team in the field was ranked in top 73 in the nation. The top ranked team in the event is Clemson, currently ranked eighth nationally.

    The Hokies return to action on April 13-14, as they compete in the Courtyard by Marriott Intercollegiate at the Devil's Ridge Golf Club in Holly Springs, N.C.
