Hokies finish second at Palmetto
Van der Vaart ties for second

AIKEN, S.C. - Virginia Tech posted a three-round total of 880 and finished second at the Cleveland Golf Palmetto Intercollegiate at the par 70, 6,565-yard Palmetto Golf Club in Aiken, S.C. on Tuesday afternoon.

The Hokies shot a final round 296 on Tuesday. Tech entered the third round in second place behind Chattanooga, which held the lead after each round. The Mocs shot a total of 850 following a final round 282 on Tuesday.

Jurrian van der Vaart (Sr., Almelo, the Netherlands) shot a three-round total of 213 and finished tied for second place with Jimmy Lytle of Elon and Fredrik Qvicker of Chattanooga. Jonathan Hodge of Chattanooga shot a three-under par 67 on Tuesday and finished at 212 to claim medalist honors by one stroke.

Nick MacDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe) shot 221 and finished in 17th place and Drew Weaver (Jr., High Point, N.C.) and Marshall Bailey (Fr., Fincastle, Va.) tied for 26th at 225 each. Aaron Eckstein (Fr., Salem, Va.) tied for 45th at 231. Garland Green (Fr., Tazewell, Va.) played the tournament as an individual and tied for 17th at 221 along with teammate MacDonald.

Chattanooga won the tournament at 850 and the Hokies were second at 880. Host USC-Aiken finished third at 881, Penn State is fourth at 890 and Elon was fifth at 892. Furman was sixth at 894, Francis Marion was seventh at 895, Charleston Southern was eighth at 900, Jacksonville State was ninth at 905 and UNC Greensboro was 10th at 912. Rhode Island was 11th at 914, Presbyterian was 12th at 922, Akron was 13th at 930, Marshall was 14th at 932 and Nebraska was 15th at 942.

The Hokies will return to action on March 23-25 at the Hootie at Bulls Bay Intercollegiate in Awendaw, S.C.
