July 2, 2008

BETHESDA, Md. - Virginia Tech golfer Drew Weaver will begin play at the AT&T National, hosted by Tiger Woods, on Thursday afternoon at the 7,255-yard, par 70 Congressional Country Club in Bethesda, Md.

Weaver, a rising senior from High Point, N.C., will tee off in the final group of the day at the 10th hole at 1:52 p.m. He is grouped in the first two rounds with professionals Kevin Streelman and Brett Rumford. Streelman, who played college golf at Duke, was the first-round leader at the 2008 U.S. Open in June.

The group will tee off in the second round on Friday morning at 9:02 a.m. from the first tee. This is Weaver's third professional and second PGA Tour event of the season. He also competed in the Masters and the Memorial Tournament.

Former Hokie Johnson Wagner will also compete in the event. He is grouped with Charles Howell III and Dean Wilson in the first two rounds. That group will tee off at 12:50 p.m., on Thursday from the 10th tee and at 8 a.m., on Friday from the first tee. Wagner won the 2008 Shell Houston Open in April for his first PGA Tour victory.

Host Tiger Woods will not compete in this year's event, as he is recovering from recent knee surgery. This is the second year of the tournament, but Congressional Country Club hosted the PGA Tour's Kemper Open from 1980-86 and was the site of 1964 and 2001 U.S. Open and the 1976 PGA Championship. The U.S. Open will return to Congressional in 2011. The course has also hosted the U.S. Senior Open, the U.S. Women's Open and the U.S. Junior Amateur.
