Hokies tied for first at Pinehurst
Weather prevents full field from finishing first round

PINEHURST, N.C. - Virginia Tech shot a first round 290 and is tied with Penn State for first place during the opening round of the Pinehurst Intercollegiate by Gatorade at the par-72, 7,035-yard Centennial Pinehurst #8 course in Pinehurst, N.C. on Sunday afternoon.

Only 12 of the 20 teams were able to complete the first round, which was played in heavy rain and cold temperatures in North Carolina. The Hokies, playing with Penn State and Minnesota, were able to complete the round.

Sophomore Marshall Bailey (Fincastle, Va.) leads the Hokies with a two-under-par 70. He is one stroke behind leader Tommy McDonagh of Penn State.

Senior Drew Weaver (High Point, N.C.) is tied for eighth at even-par 72 and redshirt junior Matt Boyd (Sugar Land, Texas) is tied for 17th at 73. Redshirt senior Will Oldham (Spartanburg, S.C.) is tied for 35th at 75 and sophomore Garland Green (Tazewell, Va.) is tied for 86th at 79.

The Hokies and Nittany Lions are tied for first at 290, three strokes ahead of Minnesota. Eastern Kentucky is fourth at 294.

The remainder of the field will finish their first round on Monday morning before beginning the second round. The final round will be played on Tuesday morning. Live scoring is available on
