Hokies third after first day at Pinehurst

PINEHURST, N.C. -- Virginia Tech shot an opening round 290 and is in third place at the Pinehurst Intercollegiate by Gatorade at the 7,009-year, par 72 Centennial Pinehurst Number 8 Course at the Pinehurst Resort on Friday afternoon.

Freshman Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) shot a first round three-under-par 69 and is in second place individually. He trails first round leader Kevin Foley of Penn State, who shot a 68 in the opening round. Moyers played his first round with four birdies and a bogey.

Junior Marshall Bailey (Fincastle, Va.) shot even-par 72 and is tied for ninth place and sophomore Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Tex.) shot 73 and is tied for 15th. Junior Garland Green (Tazewell, Va.) is tied for 41st with a 76 and junior Aaron Eckstein (Salem, Va.) is tied for 59th after a 78 on Friday. Freshman Jacob Everts (Ooltewah, Tenn.) is playing the event as an individual and is tied for 52nd at 77.

Penn State took the first round lead with an even-par 288, one stroke ahead of Eastern Kentucky and two strokes ahead of the Hokies. Michigan State is fourth at 292, VCU is fifth at 294 and UNC Greensboro is sixth at 296. SMU is seventh at 297, ODU is eighth at 299, Radford is ninth at 300 and Ball State, Northern Illinois and Marshall are tied for 10th at 301. Belmont is 13th at 303, Richmond is 14th at 305 and Francis Marion is 15th at 307.

The tournament continues with single rounds on Saturday and Sunday.
