GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Virginia Tech golf team shot a two-round total of 19-under-par 557 and are in third place at the sixth annual UNCG Bridgestone Golf Collegiate men’s golf tournament in Greensboro, N.C. The event is being played at the 7,197-yard, par-72 Forest Oaks Country Club.
The Hokies shot six-under-par 282 in the morning’s first round, before posting a 13-under-par 275 in the afternoon’s second round. The 275 is Tech’s second-lowest round of the season.
Sophomore Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Virginia) is tied for the individual lead, shooting an eight-under-par 136. He is tied with four other players for the lead, entering Sunday’s final round.
Freshman Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Virginia) is tied for 15th place at 139 and seniors Marshall Bailey (Fincastle, Virginia) and Garland Green (Tazewell, Virginia) are tied for 19th place at 141. Junior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) is tied for 34th place at even-par 144. Senior Aaron Eckstein (Salem, Virginia) is playing the event as an individual and is tied for 65th at 149.
All five players in the Hokies’ line-up are even-par or better. In the morning’s first round, all five Hokies’ finished under par. Moyers shot five-under-par 67 and Chalkley shot four-under-par 68 in the afternoon round. Only one of the Hokies’ 10 rounds posted on Saturday was par-or-higher.
North Carolina shot a two-round total of 28-under-par 548 and leads Michigan by six strokes and the Hokies by nine strokes. Auburn is fourth at 560, Charlotte and host UNC Greensboro are tied for fifth at 564 and Northwestern is seventh at 567. Toledo is eighth at 571, Minnesota and Mississippi State are tied for ninth at 576 and VCU Is 11th at 578. Pepperdine and Kentucky are tied for 12th at 580 and Michigan State is 14th at 588.
The final round will be played on Sunday. This is the Hokies’ final tournament of the 2010-11
