GREENVILLE, S.C. – The Virginia Tech golf team shot a three-round total of 862 and finished third at the 42nd Annual Furman Intercollegiate at the par-72, 6,994-yard Furman University Golf Club in Greenville, S.C. on Sunday. Tech shot rounds of 285, 287 and 290 for the weekend.
Senior Garland Green (Tazewell, Virginia) shot a two-under-par 214 and tied for sixth place. He finished eight strokes behind medalist William Sjaichudin of Purdue.
Senior Marshall Bailey (Fincastle, Virginia) and junior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) tied for 15th place at 216. Sophomore Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Virginia) tied for 30th at 220 and freshman Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Virginia) tied for 34th at 221. Redshirt freshman Marc MacDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe) played the tournament as an individual and tied for 51st place at 225. Redmond’s 68 on Sunday was tied for the second-lowest round of the day.
Clemson shot a final round 16-under-par 272 and won the team title at 16-under-par 848, 12 strokes ahead of Kennesaw State and 14 strokes ahead of the Hokies. East Carolina was fourth at 867, host Furman was fifth at 873, Chattanooga was sixth at 878 and Gardner-Webb and Purdue tied for seventh at 879. Wofford was ninth at 888, Winthrop and Charleston Southern tied for 10th at 891, UNC Wilmington was 12th at 892, Troy was 13th at 894 and Elon was 14th at 900. Louisville was 15th at 902, Western Carolina was 16th at 904, Davidson was 17th at 905, Presbyterian was 18th at 906, Marshall and Samford tied for 19th at 909, Francis Marion was 21st at 919 and Temple finished 22nd at 924..
The Hokies return to action on April 2-3 at the Administaff/Augusta State Invitational at the Forest Hills Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia, hosted by defending national champion Augusta State.
