BLACKBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech golf team will open the 2011-12 schedule at the Northern Intercollegiate at Rich Harvest Farms in Sugar Grove, Ill., on Saturday and Sunday. The event will be played on the par 71, 6,900-yard Gold and Silver Courses at Rich Harvest Farms. The yardage on Sunday is expected to lengthened to 7,400 yards.
Junior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Virginia) leads the Hokies into the event. Moyers was third on the team in scoring average last season. He led the Hokies in scoring in four events last season, including the first two of the fall and three of the five fall tournaments.
A pair of freshmen, Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) and Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) will man the second and third spots for the Hokies. Both will be making their collegiate debuts, coming off of strong summer seasons.
Sophomore Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Virginia) will play in the fourth position for the Hokies. He played extremely well in the spring season last year and competed in the 2011 U.S. Amateur in Erin, Wisc., during the summer. Senior Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) will round out the starting unit for Tech. Redmond was the Hokies’ top finisher in both the 2011 ACC Men’s Golf Championship and the 2011 NCAA Virginia Tech Regional in May.
This will be the Hokies’ first-ever visit to this event and are the only ACC team in the tournament. Other top teams in the field include Illinois, which was ranked No. 5 nationally in the final Golfstat.com poll of last season, and 2011 NCAA Championship competitors Tulsa, Indiana and UCF. Northern Illinois University is the host of this event.
Rich Harvest Farms is one of the top courses in the Midwest. Built in 1989, it has hosted the 2007 NCAA Central Regional and the 2009 Solheim Cup matches.
The tournament will begin at 6:45 a.m. on Saturday, with a second round to follow that afternoon. The final round will take place on Sunday. Live scoring will be available at:
