MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. – Virginia Tech shot a two-round total of 11-over-par 587 and is in second place after the first day at the VCU Shootout at the Hermitage Country Club in Manakin-Sabot, Va. The event is being played on the par 72, 6,955-yard Manakin course.
The Hokies opened the day with a four-over-par 292 in the morning round and followed that with a seven-over-par 295 in Monday’s second round. Tech trails leader Wichita State by seven strokes entering Tuesday morning’s final round. Vincent’s second round 70 was the low score on the day for the Hokies.
Sophomore Scott Vincent (Harare, Zimbabwe) leads the Hokies with a two-over-par 146. He is tied for ninth place overall and trails leader Sean Bosdosh of Maryland by five strokes.
Freshman Maclain Huge (Lovettesville, Va.) is tied for 12th place overall with a three-over-par 147 and sophomore Trevor Cone (Concord, N.C.) is tied for 16th place at 148. Senior Mikey Moyers (Stanardsville, Va.) is tied for 22nd at 149 and junior Bryce Chalkley (Richmond, Va.) is tied for 24th place at 150. Huge recorded one of two eagles on Monday. He made a two on the 333-yard, par 4 No. 6.
Three Hokies are playing this event as individuals, led by redshirt junior Jacob Everts (Ooltewah, Tenn.), who is tied for 16th place at 148. Sophomore Miles Curley (Rock Hill, S.C.) is in 54th place at 158 and redshirt junior Marc MacDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe) is in 68th place at 168.
Following the Shockers and the Hokies, Iowa State is four strokes behind the Hokies at 591. Long Beach State is fourth at 592, Maryland is fifth at 593, and Richmond is sixth at 600. ODU is seventh at 606, George Mason is eighth at 607 and UNCG and East Carolina are tied for ninth at 609. Host VCU is 11th at 613 and James Madison is 12th at 625.
The final round will be played Tuesday morning.
