Mark Lawrence Jr. ties for sixth in stroke play at US Amateur

Virginia Tech golfer Mark Lawrence Jr. posted a two-round total of 3-under 137 on Tuesday and tied for sixth place in stroke play at the 2017 U.S. Amateur Golf Championship. The weeklong event is being played at the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, California and Bel-Air Country Club in Los Angeles, California.

Lawrence, a rising junior from Richmond, Virginia, carded a 73 in Tuesday’s second round after a 6-under 64 in Monday’s opening round. In second round action, Lawrence played his second round at Riviera, after opening play at Bel-Air.

Lawrence tied with Joaquin Nieman of Chile, the world’s top-ranked amateur at 137. The duo finished six strokes behind medalist Hayden Wood of Oklahoma State.

Lawrence advances to match play and will play his Round of 64 match at Riviera Country Club on Wednesday morning.

The field of 312 golfers was cut to 64 players following two rounds of stroke play, playing both Riviera and Bel-Air. All rounds of match play will be played at Riviera and will be broadcast by either Fox, FS1 or, culminating in a 36-hole final match, to be played on Sunday, Aug. 20.
