Men's Soccer Ties A-League Team in Spring Match Opener
Schlegel and Bogner help lead Hokies to tie
March 19, 2002 The Virginia Tech men's soccer team traveled to Sportsbackers Stadium in Richmond, Va., Sunday and earned a 2-2 tie against the Richmond Kickers. The Kickers, a perennial A-League soccer power, came out and took the lead after stretching the Hokie defense. Shortly after trailing 0-1, John Havas (Mechanicsburg, Pa.) beat his man on the right wing and crossed the ball to Bobby O'Brien (Williamsburg, Va.). O'Brien played it to an onrushing Karl Schlegel (Indianapolis, Ind.) who slotted the ball past the Kicker's goalie to tie the game at one goal apiece. During the second half, the Kickers capitalized once again on a defensive mistake and took a one goal advantage, but Justin Bogner (Herndon, Va.) responded by rocketing a free-kick into the back of the net from approximately 30-yards out. The goal came with 15 minutes remaining in the game and gave both teams a deserving tie at the end of the day. "I was most impressed with our team's commitment to stick to the game plan for the majority of the game," said first-year Head Coach Oliver Weiss. "Last week, we worked on pressuring the middle third and staying compact and that's what I wanted to see accomplished today and the boys did it." "The Kickers reserved Sportsbackers stadium for a small fee to host the Hokies and that made all the difference in staging a first class atmosphere for our opening spring game," Weiss said. "They are a terrific organization and we always love to play them at this time of the year when they are still in their preseason/tryout phase." The next spring contests will be in Bluefield, W. Va., on April 6th. Tech takes on Davidson at noon and NAIA powerhouse Rio Grande at 4 P.M.
