March 31, 2003

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech men's soccer team has announced its 2003 fall schedule. The Hokies will play 10 games in their new soccer stadium, including the home opener against Wake Forest, the first-ever Tech-hosted tournament and five matches against perennially powerful BIG EAST opponents.

The Hokies host nationally-ranked Wake Forest, a No. 1 seed in the 2002 NCAA Tournament, to open their home slate on Sept. 5, playing for the first time under the lights in the new stadium. The inaugural Virginia Tech Classic will take place Sept. 12 and 14. Tech will face Appalachian State and Georgia State, with Radford also taking part in the tournament.

Tech finally kicks off its conference home schedule with a match against Rutgers on Sept. 28. The Hokies are in Blacksburg for six of their final eight games, including BIG EAST matches with Connecticut, St. John's, Notre Dame and Pittsburgh. Also on the schedule are non-conference home contests with area-rivals Liberty and Radford.

Tech's road schedule includes trips to conference opponents Villanova, Georgetown, Syracuse, Boston College (the defending BIG EAST Champions) and Providence. The Hokies will also take part in the Dayton Nike Classic Sept. 19 and 21, in addition to the season-opening Radford Tournament on Aug. 29 and Sept. 1.

"I can't wait to start the season with 13 newcomers and a wealth of veterans," said head coach Oliver Weiss. " We're excited about taking on the challenges of the schedule."
