Preseason poll released by ACC office Tuesday

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech, beginning its first season in the Atlantic Coast Conference under the direction of third-year head coach Oliver Weiss, was picked to finish seventh in the eight-team league in the ACC preseason soccer poll.

North Carolina led the way with 57 points, including four first place votes. Trailing the Tar Heels by just six points was Virginia, who garnered one of the other four first place nominations.

Wake Forest and Maryland were third and fourth with 45 and 40 points, respectively. The 2003 national semifinalist Terrapins received one first place vote.

Clemson was fifth in the poll with 31 points, including one first place nomination. Duke was sixth with 25 points.

Newcomer Virginia Tech, coming off its first-ever NCAA appearance, took the seventh spot with 21 points overall and the other first place vote. N.C. State rounded out the preseason poll with 18 points.

The Hokies return eight starters off the 2003 squad that tied the school-record for wins in a season with 14.
