Silva scores lone goal in Hokie victory
September 1, 2001

The Virginia Tech Hokies men's soccer team opened the 2001 season with a 1-0 shutout victory over the Dayton Flyers. Fred Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil) scored the winning goal in the final minute of play to give Tech an opening season victory.

The match was dominated throughout by defense and strong goalkeeping by both sides. Both teams remained locked at zero until Silva received a pass from Ty Enmark (Sterling Heights, Mich,) that he deposited in the back of the goal to give the Hokies the win. The goal by Silva was scored with just 14 seconds remaining in the match. Drew Myers (High Point, N.C.) was also credited with an assist on the play.

Tech's keeper, Colin Kibler (Virginia Beach, Va.), was strong in goal for the Hokies, collecting five saves on his way to the shutout victory over Dayton.

The Hokies are now 1-0-0 on the season and the Flyers fall to 0-1-0. Next up for Tech is the Musketeers from Xavier. They are scheduled to play at 2 p.m. on Sunday.
