Men's Soccer Blanks Xavier
Hokies record second straight shutout
September 2, 2001

The Virginia Tech men's soccer team improved its record to 2-0 with a shutout victory over the Xavier Musketeers Sunday in Cincinnati, Ohio.

The Tech defense held the Musketeers in check for the majority of the game, holding them to only six shots. The Hokies broke the scoreless tie at the 81:28 mark when senior Fred Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil) scored off sophomore Mike DeTora's (Auburn, Mass.) throw in. Silva proceeded to take the throw in and beat the Xavier keeper with a low shot, just inside the left post.

The Hokie defense made senior Colin Kibler's (Virginia Beach, Va.) goalkeeping job easy. Kibler only had to make one save on his way to his second shutout in as many games. Musketeer goalkeeper Brian Schaeper also played well, collecting eight saves on 16 Hokie shots.

The loss drops Xavier to 0-1 on the year. Tech continues its road trip on Wednesday when it travels to Elon, N.C. to do battle with the Elon Phoenix at 4 p.m.
