Two Men's Soccer Players Honored By BIG EAST
Jonmaire, Mertins earn player of the week honors

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Sophomore Ken Jonmaire (East Aurora, N.Y.) and junior Lasse Mertins (Rotenburg, Germany) were honored by the BIG EAST Conference as men's soccer Offensive Player of the Week and Co-Rookie of the Week, respectively. Jonmaire and Mertins led the Hokies (4-2-1 overall, 2-1-0 BIG EAST) in an undefeated week with back-to-back BIG EAST victories over West Virginia and Villanova.

Jonmaire led Tech with five points (two goals, one assist) in its two BIG EAST matches. In the Hokies' home opener on Wednesday, Sept. 18, he scored the Hokies' third goal of the match in a double-overtime victory over the Mountaineers. In Tech's 3-0 shutout of Villanova, Jonmaire contributed with a goal and an assist, including what proved to be the game-winning goal. Through seven games this season, Jonmaire has eight points (three goals, two assists) and a team-best two game-winning goals.

Mertins, a newcomer to the Hokies this season, anchored the Hokies' defense in their first two BIG EAST wins of the season, including a shutout against Villanova. He contributed on the offensive end as well, scoring two goals in the two BIG EAST wins boosting his season total to six points (three goals). Tech's defense has limited its opponents to eight goals in seven games and has three shutouts this season.

Mertins, a 24-year old junior, was also named to the National Team of the Week and Virginia Tech Athlete of the Week for the week ending Sept. 22.

The men's soccer team will return to action on Tuesday when the Hokies travel to area-rival Radford for a non-conference match. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
