SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Virginia Tech men's soccer team fell to the Seton Hall Pirates, 2-1, in a BIG EAST match on Saturday afternoon in South Orange, N.J. Seton Hall senior Phil Swenda scored 5:31 into the first overtime period off a cross from senior Vincent Scerbo to give the Pirates a 2-1 come-from-behind win over Tech at Owen T. Carroll Field. With the loss, Tech falls to 4-4-1 on the year, 2-2-0 in the BIG EAST, while Seton Hall improves to 5-3-1 overall and 3-2 in the conference.
Swenda controlled Scerbo's pass and fired a shot with his left foot into the upper left corner of the net past Hokie goalkeeper Chase Harrison, completing the Pirates' comeback from 1-0 down. Swenda also assisted on Seton Hall's game-tying goal with 19:53 left in the second half.
Seton Hall junior Mark Pedreiras tied the game at 1-1 in the 71st minute of play on a goal from 15 yards out.
The Pirates played from behind for most of the contest, as Virginia Tech got on the board just 7:57 into the match when Matt Bright (Chesapeake, Va.) scored from point blank range into an open net. Teammate Bailey Allman (Virginia Beach, Va.) controlled a loose ball in front of the Pirate goalkeeper and lobbed it across the box to a waiting Bright.
Out-shot 7-6 in the first half, Seton Hall turned up the pressure after halftime. The Pirates held a 17-3 shot advantage in the second half and overtime, and a 23-10 overall advantage. The Pirates had several strong opportunities in the second half but were stymied often by Harrison, who had a career-best 12 saves.
Seton Hall also had 12 corner kicks to just five for the Hokies.
Tech will look to rebound on Wednesday night when it travels to Harrisonburg, Va. for a match against James Madison. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
