Scott Spangler Earns BIG EAST Weekly Award
The Beat
September 29, 2003

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Virginia Tech freshman forward Scott Spangler (Media, Pa.) was named BIG EAST co-Rookie of the Week on Monday. Spangler shared the league's weekly honor with Seton Hall's Sacha Kljestan.

Spangler played a key role in the Hokies' 2-1 overtime win against 10th-ranked Rutgers on Sunday. He scored the Hokies' first goal and finished with three shots. He also notched a goal in the match at Georgetown last Wednesday. For the year, Spangler is tied for the team lead with three goals and has six points, good enough to rank third on the team. Spangler has put together an impressive shot-on-goal average. He has only seven shots on goal, but three have made it to the back of the net. He has helped the Hokies to a 7-2-1 record, including two wins against nationally ranked opponents.

Kljestan scored a goal and recorded two assists in Seton Hall's 4-2 triumph over St. John's. He leads the Pirates with three goals.

Villanova's David O'Donnell and Notre Dame's Justin Detter earned co-Offensive Player of the Week accolades, while Irish defenseman Kevin Richards was named Defensive Player of the Week. Providence goalie Jeff Newman earned the league award for keepers.

O'Donnell scored a pair of game-winning goals for the Wildcats, while Detter scored goals in both Notre Dame wins last week. Richards had an assist against Georgetown as the Irish held the Hoyas to one goal and allowed zero goals against Bradley. Newman became the first Providence goalie to record two consecutive BIG EAST match shutouts, and he made 12 saves in two matches.

The Virginia Tech Hokies' next match is scheduled for Oct. 5 at Syracuse.
