Tech grabs New River Rock in shutout victory
    October 2, 2001

The Virginia Tech men's soccer team shutout the Radford Highlanders by a score of 4-0 Tuesday afternoon in Blacksburg, Va. With the win the Hokies reclaim the New River Rock, given annually to the winner of the Tech/Radford match.

The Hokies jumped out to a 1-0 lead at the 21:16 mark when Justin Bogner (Herndon, Va.) blasted a shot that slipped through the goalkeeper's hands and trickled into the goal. There was not assist on the play and the goal was Bogner's first as a member of the Tech squad.

Drew Myers (High Point, N.C.) increased the Hokies' lead to two goals when he scored off of a Fred Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil) assist. Silva punched a shot into the keepers chest that he could not control and Myers picked up the loose ball for the score. The goal came at the 43:15 mark and was Myers' third of the season. The assist by Silva was his seventh of the year.

Tech took a commanding 3-0 lead at the 51:36 mark when Ken Jonmaire (East Aurora, N.Y.) scored on a shot that deflected off the goalkeeper and into the back of the net. The goal represents the third match in a row that Jonmaire has scored.

Silva ended the scoring on the day with the Hokies' final goal at the 79:45 mark. Stephan D' Adamo (Mechanicsville, Va.) played the ball across to Silva and he beat the keeper far post. The goal was Silva's sixth of the season and D'Adamo's first assist of the year.

Colin Kibler (Virginia Beach, Va.) played the entire match in goal for Tech, collecting four saves on 10 Highlander shots.
