    October 29, 2000

The Virginia Tech men's soccer team defeated the Musketeers from Xavier, 4-2, Sunday afternoon in Blacksburg.

The Hokies got on the board first when junior Fred Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil) completed an amazing run by scoring his sixth goal on the season. Silva beat three Xavier defenders to give Tech a 1-0 lead at the 23:51 mark in the match. There was no assist on the goal.

Tech increased its lead to 3-0 with two quick goals right before halftime. The first goal came at the 40:48 mark in the match. Freshman Beau Hubbard (Weems, Va.) scored his first collegiate goal when he took a pass from Silva and beat Musketeer goalkeeper Paul Wesseling. Just over a minute later, the Hokies would increase their lead to 3-0. Freshman Bobby O'Brien (Williamsburg, Va.) headed a free kick from redshirt freshman Karl Schlegel (Indianapolis, Ind.) at the 42:15 mark. The goal was also O'Brien's first of his collegiate career.

Xavier would cut into the Tech advantage in the second half when it scored two goals. The first came on a free kicked awarded to Xavier in the box because of a handball. Rob Bakker knocked the ball past Hokie senior goalkeeper Ben Pinkerton (Blacksburg, Va.) at the 57:36 mark in the match. The Musketeers would get to within one goal seven minutes later. Andy Crouch scored on a header at the 64:37 mark to make the score 3-2 in the advantage of the Hokies. Josh Hammerschmidt was credited with an assist on the goal.

Tech would put the match away at the 64:56 mark when Silva scored his second goal of the day. Silva took the ball from O'Brien 20-yards out and knocked in a shot that found its home in the upper left corner of the goal. The goal was Silva's seventh on the year.

Junior Colin Kibler (Virginia Beach, Va.) and Pinkerton each played a half in goal for the Hokies. Kibler collected three saves and allowed no goals. Pinkerton tallied six saves in the match while allowing two goals. Wesseling and Jeff Stumpf also split time in goal for Xavier. Wesseling collected three saves and allowing three goals in the first half. Stumpf totaled two saves in the second half and allowed one goal.

The win is the Hokies' fourth straight on the year and leaves them with a 6-8-2 record with three games left in the season. Tech is back in action Wednesday when it hosts Old Dominion. It's the Hokies' final home match of the season.
