Men's Soccer Downs Gardner-Webb 5-0
    Myers scores two in win

    The Virginia Tech men's soccer team defeated the Gardner-Webb Runnin' Bulldogs by a score of 5-0 Wednesday afternoon in Blacksburg, Va.

    The Hokies started scoring early and never stopped. Bobby O'Brien (Williamsburg, Va.) knocked in the first goal of the afternoon just 2:56 into the match. O'Brien scored the goal when Fred Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil) sent the ball over to him and he beat the goalkeeper with a shot on the far post. The goal was O'Brien's sixth of the year, tying him for the team lead in goals scored.

    Drew Myers (High Point, N.C.) upped the Tech lead to 2-0 when he scored at the 38:39 mark. Myers chested a long ball down in front of the goal and chipped it in for the score. Garrett Owens (San Antonio, Texas) was credited with an assist on the goal.

    The second half began much the same as the first when Jeremy Parsels (Woodbridge, Va.) scored at the 47:35 mark. Parsels scored on a nice crossed ball from Stephan D'Adamo (Mechanicsville, Va.) that Silva flicked over to Parsels. Parsels chipped it by the goalkeeper to give the Hokies a 3-0 advantage. The goal was Parsels' second of the year.

    Myers added Tech's fourth goal of the afternoon at the 70:25 mark. Keith Benderoth (Woodbridge, Va.) spotted Myers in the box and crossed the ball to him. Myers headed it in for his second goal of the day. Histwo goal performance gives him a total of five on the year.

    The final goal of the day came at the 74:56 mark and was scored by Ken Jonmaire (East Aurora, N.Y.). Jonmaire scored his fourth goal of the year when he knocked in a Silva pass to make the final score 5-0. Silva was credited with an assist on the goal, giving him three on the day.

    Goalkeeper Colin Kibler (Virginia Beach, Va.) produced another shutout performance in goal for the Hokies. He played the entire match between the pipes and did not allow a goal. Kibler has a school-record seven shutouts on the year. Troy Steffen also played the entire match in goal for Garner-Webb, collecting five saves on 14 shots.

    The win improves Tech's record to 9-5-2 overall and drops the Runnin' Bulldogs to 4-13. The Hokies are back in action Sunday when they travel to Villanova, Pa., to take on the Villanova Wildcats. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m.
