Men's Soccer Coach Announces Retirement
Cheynet to work with men's soccer program through 2003
November 16, 2001 Head men's soccer coach Jerry Cheynet announces his retirement, effective December 31, 2003. Cheynet has served as head men's soccer coach for 28 years and compiled a 238-213-35 record. Cheynet guided Virginia Tech through its BIG EAST debut in 2001, recently participating in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST Tournament. A search for a new head coach will begin immediately. Cheynet will remain on Tech's soccer staff for the next two seasons. Tech Director of Athletics Jim Weaver said, "We are appreciative to Coach Cheynet for his loyal and continuing service to Tech athletics. With our membership in the BIG EAST Conference, soccer takes on added emphasis. The BIG EAST Conference requirements demand that we increase staffing and scholarship spending in men's soccer. We have developed a plan to do so. Coach Cheynet's announcement gives us a great opportunity to manage the transition in this program."
