Silva awarded All-BIG EAST second team honors
November 16, 2001 Fred Silva (Sao Paulo, Brazil), a redshirt senior on the Virginia Tech men's soccer team has been named to the 2001 All-BIG EAST Second Team. The awards were presented at the conference's annual men's soccer awards banquet held Thursday night in Vernon, Conn. Silva completed another phenomenal season in 2001 in which he helped his team to an overall record of 11-6-2 and a bid to the BIG EAST Tournament in the Hokies' first year as a member of the conference. He was the team leader in points scored (30), goals (9) and assists (12). His most impressive performance of the year came in the Tech's 8-0 victory over Elon. In the game, Silva broke two school records. His nine total points (two goals/five assists) broke the old school mark of eight points in a match held by Jason Entlich. His five assists in the match shattered the old record of three. He was named BIG EAST Player of the Week for his performance. Silva also holds the school record for most assists in a single season (13) which he set in 1999 and the career assist mark (32). This is Silva's second post-season award. He was named to the All-Atlantic 10 Conference second team in 1999. He was voted second-team all-state VASID in 2000. For a complete listing of post season awards visit www.bigeast.org/sports/msoccer.
