November 6, 2003

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech senior defender Lasse Mertins (Grad., Rotenburg, Germany) has earned a SoccerAmerica magazine Team of the Week Award this week. This is the third time this season a Hokie men's player has earned one of the weekly honors.

Mertins was instrumental in leading the 23rd-ranked Hokies to shutouts against Pittsburgh (6-0) and Providence (1-0). He helped limit Pittsburgh to only one shot-on-goal and keyed the Hokie backfield in allowing Providence just seven shots-on-goal. The wins lifted the Hokies to a second place finish in the BIG EAST, their highest finish since joining the league.

Virginia Tech sophomore Charlie Howe (Mechanicsville, Va.) earned the honor after his three assist-one goal performance at Syracuse, while fellow sophomore Dustin Dyer (Ashland, Va,) picked up an award after his game-winning goal against conference champion St. John's. Mertins is the only BIG EAST player to earn an award this week.

Mertins will look to lead the Hokie backfield to another shutout against Providence on Sunday, Nov. 9, at 1 p.m., when the Hokies host the Friars in the BIG EAST Tournament quarterfinals.
