December 10, 2003

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech men's soccer player Lasse Mertins (Sr., Rotenburg, Germany) has been named to the 2003 NSCAA/adidas All-South Atlantic Region Team. Mertins, who was named a third team selection in 2002, was named to the second team this season.

He led the Hokies to a school-record 14 wins and the second round of the NCAA college cup - the Hokies' first-ever appearance in the NCAA tournament. Mertins' selection is the 16th All-South Atlantic region award given to a Hokie player since 1987. He is just the fourth player to earn the honor in two consecutive seasons.

Mertins wrapped up his two-year Hokie career in 2003 with two goals and two assists, giving him seven goals for his career. More importantly, however, was his outstanding play as a defender. He helped the Hokies post six shutouts and led a defense that limited 20 of 22 opponents to two goals or less. Mertins was instrumental in leading Virginia Tech to a second place finish in the BIG EAST regular season after the Hokies were picked to finish seventh.

The All-South Atlantic Region award gives Mertins an impressive resumé of accolades from the 2003 season. He was named first-team academic all-district and then went on to earn third-team academic all-American honors as selected by CoSIDA. Mertins was named second-team all-BIG EAST, and during the year, he also garnered a SoccerAmerica magazine Team of the Week Award.
