Freshman named Player of the Week
October 10, 2005 GREENSBORO, N.C. - Virginia Tech freshman forward Patrick Nyarko was named the Atlantic Coast Conference men's soccer Player of the Week after scoring the game-winning goal in both of the Hokies' 1-0 wins last week. Nyarko netted the game-winner against Liberty at 51:17 as Tech defeated the Flames. At No. 4 North Carolina, Nyarko sealed the win in the 85th minute of action. It was the first-ever victory for the Hokies over the Tar Heels. It was also the first loss of the season for North Carolina at Fetzer Field. A native of Kuntase, Ghana, Nyarko has tallied three goals on the season, including the two game-winners last week. He has also totaled three assists on the year. In the four-game winning streak, Nyarko assisted on the first two game-winners and netted the game-winning goals in the last two. Earlier in the day, Nyarko was named to the College Soccer News National Team of the Week. He was the only true freshman on the team. The Hokies return to action tomorrow, when they travel to Elon for a 4 p.m., contest. Tech returns home on Saturday, Oct. 15 when the Hokies host NC State in a 7 p.m., contest at the Virginia Tech Soccer Stadium.
