Freshman continues to garner national accolades

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech freshman forward Patrick Nyarko was named to the Soccer America Team of the Week earlier today for his efforts in the Hokies' two shutout victories.

Nyarko, a native of Kuntase, Ghana, scored the game-winning goal in wins over Liberty and No. 4 North Carolina. Tech won both games by 1-0 margins.

The Hokies' win against the Tar Heels was North Carolina's first loss of the season at Fetzer Field. The win over the Tar Heels also marked the first time in the program's history that Tech had defeated North Carolina.

Nyarko was one of four freshmen selected to the Soccer America Team of the Week and was the only freshman forward on the team.

Behind the help of Nyarko, Tech garnered its first national ranking since the final NSCAA Poll on Tuesday afternoon, debuting at No. 23.

The Hokies (6-3-3) are carrying a five-game winning streak into their match with the No. 11 Wolfpack of N.C. State. The two will square off Saturday night at 7 p.m., in the Virginia Tech Soccer Stadium.
