Hokies Fall To Blue Devils, 2-0
Harrison tallies five saves in ACC Quarterfinals
November 9, 2005

Box Score Duke 2, Virginia Tech 0

CARY, N.C. - The fourth-seeded Virginia Tech men's soccer team suffered a 2-0 defeat to the fifth-seeded Duke Blue Devils Wednesday afternoon at the SAS Complex in the Atlantic Coast Conference quarterfinals.

The Hokies fall to 10-5-4 on the season while Duke improves to 11-4-2. The Blue Devils advance to the ACC semifinals where they will meet the Maryland-Wake Forest winner on Friday night at 5:30 p.m.

In the 44th minute, Duke's Tomek Charowski took a corner kick from the right side of the field. Playing it into the box, the Blue Devils' Chris Loftus headed it to Chase Perfect, who blasted a shot into the left corner of the goal for the game-winner. The score was Perfect's first of the season.

Tech had a chance to tie it at one apiece in the second half when sophomore Marcus Reed received a pass on a breakaway. Dribbling it into the box, Reed was eight yards out straightaway and drilled a shot right at Duke's keeper, Justin Papadakis. Papadakis smothered the shot, keeping the Hokies off the board.

After pushing everyone forward in the final minute, including the Hokies' goalie Chase Harrison, Duke was able to clear the ball in the closing seconds. Gathering the ball close to midfield, the Blue Devils' Zach Pope launched a shot that found the back of the net with one second left on the clock, giving Duke the 2-0 win.

Tech was held to only two shots on goal for the match while the Blue Devils tallied seven shots on net.

For the match, Harrison amassed five saves while Papadakis totaled two.

The Hokies will find out who their opponent will be in the 48-team NCAA Men's Soccer Tournament on Monday, Nov. 14 at 4 p.m., on ESPN.
