March 23, 2006

RICHMOND, Va. - The Virginia Tech men's soccer team defeated the Richmond Kickers 1-0 last weekend to open the Hokies' spring season.

Tech's Patrick Nyarko recorded the game's only goal on an assist by Ben Nason. Nason crossed the ball from the right flank into the box where Nyarko outmaneuvered two defenders before putting the ball into the back of the net for the eventual game winner.

The Hokies had an all-round solid defensive game. Tech's walk-on goalie Matt Ells played the entire match between the pipes and recorded three superb saves to shut out the USL Division 2 pro team.

The Hokies are back in action on Sunday, March 26 at 10:15 a.m., against American. At 2 p.m., Tech will host Carson-Newman. Both games will be played at the Virginia Tech soccer practice facility.
