No. 19 Hokies dominate Navy in season opener 3-0
Marcus Reed tallies goal and two assists
August 25, 2006

Box Score VT 3, Navy 0

BALTIMORE, Md. - Junior Marcus Reed and the No. 19 Virginia Tech men's soccer team cruised to a 3-0 season-opening victory Friday afternoon over Navy at the UMBC adidas Kick-Off Classic in Baltimore, Md. Reed, a midfielder from Virginia Beach, Va., headed in the first goal off a Charlie Campbell corner kick before assisting on each of the other Hokie scores.

Reed's 10th-career goal came in just the ninth minute of the game, and the Hokies (1-0-0) never looked back. They out-shot the Midshipmen 15-2, and held a 10-0 advantage in shots on goal. Tech attempted 13 corner kicks to Navy's one, and drew 14 fouls while committing only four.

In his return from a 2005 injury that cost him most of the season, redshirt junior Ben Nason made his presence felt immediately when he fired a shot just inside the right post from 10 yards out to make it 2-0. The assist went to Reed and came less than two minutes into the second half.

The game-sealer came at the 64:10 mark when senior Eric Vickers took a Reed pass on a three-on-two break and netted it from the right wing about eight yards out.

Junior Drew Czekanski earned his first career win while playing 66:22 between the pipes. Freshman Brendan Dunn finished out the game to complete the shutout.

Thomas Jenkins made seven saves for the Midshipmen (0-1-0).

Virginia Tech will face off against the host UMBC Retrievers on Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
