ACC announces 2005-06 Academic Honor Roll

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The 50th annual Atlantic Coast Conference Academic Honor Roll, noting academic excellence by student-athletes for the 2005-06 school year, was released today by Commissioner John D. Swofford.
The Honor Roll is comprised of those student-athletes who participated in a varsity-level sport and registered a grade point average of 3.0 or better for the full academic year. In its first season as a 12-member league, the ACC set the conference record for the 20th consecutive year as 2,597 student-athletes were honored for their hard work in the classroom this past season. Duke led the conference in total selections for the 18th-straight year placing 362 student-athletes on the list. The Blue Devils narrowly edged Boston College for the top spot as the Eagles placed 359 athletes on this year's Academic Honor Roll. North Carolina was third with 275, while Maryland was fourth with 254. Virginia tallied 221 student-athletes, followed by Clemson (195), Florida State (187), NC State (184), Virginia Tech (177), Georgia Tech (147), Wake Forest (132) and Miami (104).
Headlining this year's Honor Roll are 16 five-time honorees from seven different schools. Florida State and Wake Forest each had three, five-time honorees, while Clemson, Georgia Tech, Maryland, North Carolina and NC State all had two a piece. The five-time honorees included Clemson's Josh Cribb and Bradley Gibson; Florida State's David Castillo, Lacy Janson and Andrew Wilson; Georgia Tech's Mike Barbosa and Adam Jones; Maryland's Michael Fleg and Mandy Pascual; North Carolina's Camilla Ihenetu and Doug Kingston; NC State's Jesse Ledbetter and Abigail Kelkie; and Wake Forest's Wesley Allen, Anne Bersagel and Jill Miller.
Florida State's Garrett Johnson, a four-time member of the ACC Honor Roll, was named a Rhodes Scholar in 2006 and is the league's first Rhodes Scholar athlete since 1987. Johnson led the Seminoles to their first team Outdoor Track & Field National Championship this past year, while earning a pair of individual national titles in the shot put during the indoor and outdoor seasons.
Also included on this year's list were National Players of the Year in Duke's J.J. Redick, Georgia Tech's Kristi Miller, Maryland's Paula Infante, North Carolina's Andrew Miller and Virginia's Matt Ward. Redick, winner of the Sullivan Award as the country's top amateur athlete and ACC Male Athlete of the Year, led the Blue Devils to the ACC regular season and tournament championships. Miller was named the Honda Player of the Year in women's tennis as she led the Yellow Jackets to their second-straight conference championship. Infante was tabbed the ACC Female Athlete of the Year guiding the Terrapins to the 2005 NCAA Field Hockey national title. A first-team All-American, Infante was the recipient of the Honda Award. Selected as the sixth overall pick in the 2006 MLB Draft, junior south paw Andrew Miller of North Carolina won the Roger Clemens Award, given to the nation's top collegiate pitcher. Miller was also selected as Baseball America's Player of the Year. Ward claimed the Tewaaraton Trophy after leading the Cavaliers to the men's lacrosse national championship and a perfect 17-0 season with a 15-7 win over Massachusetts in the title match.
Wake Forest's Anne Bersagel, a five-time ACC Honor Roll honoree and the 2005-06 ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American Member of the Year was also featured on this year's list. NC State's Shaina Ervin, the 2006 ACC Softball Tournament MVP and a three-time Honor Roll member, led the Wolfpack to their first-ever ACC Softball Championship in just their third season of existence.
Miami's Kelly Jennings, a first-team All-American and the Seattle Seahawks' first round draft pick in the 2006 NFL Draft, was honored for the second time in his career. Also receiving honors for the second time in her career was Virginia Tech's Angela Tincher, the ACC Softball Player and Pitcher of the Year this past season.
Boston College women's basketball player Brooke Queenan and Clemson men's soccer player Bradley Gibson were both named to the Academic Honor Roll and are recipients of the 2006 ACC Weaver-James-Corrigan postgraduate scholarships.
