Men's soccer begins spring exhibition schedule
Hokies beat Charlotte, fall to Elon
March 4, 2007 GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Virginia Tech men's soccer team opened its spring exhibition schedule on Sunday with a neutral doubleheader in Greensboro, N.C., defeating Charlotte, 2-0, before losing to Elon, 2-1. In the first match, the Hokies shut out the 49ers behind a goal from freshman James Gilson (Greenwood, N.Y.) in the first half, and a score from junior Marcus Reed (Chesapeake, Va.) in the second. In the second match, Gilson got Tech out to a 1-0 lead, but the Phoenix scored a goal right before the half to tie it up. Elon then netted the game-winner on a free kick in the middle of the second half. "Despite the performance against Elon, we were definitely happy to get outside and play some matches," head coach Oliver Weiss said. The Hokies will take a week off for spring break, and will return to the pitch for a bout the with the USL Division 2 champion Richmond Kickers at Sports Backers Stadium in the state's capitol.
