BLACKSBURG, Va. - In conjunction with the Virginia Tech men's soccer team, a pair of professional soccer clubs - the Houston Dynamo of Major League Soccer, and the Richmond Kickers of the United Soccer League - recently held hugely successful charity events to raise money to the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund in response the events of April 16.

Nearly 4,000 fans showed up at the University of Richmond Stadium Tuesday night to watch the Hokies battle the Kickers in support of the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund.

Hokie head coach Oliver Weiss was welcomed by the Houston Dynamo to represent the Virginia Tech community for a pre-game ceremony (above) and coin toss (below).
The Kickers hosted the Hokies in an exhibition match Tuesday night at the University of Richmond Stadium, and donated all proceeds that were made from the $5.00 admission charge. Nearly 4,000 people from the Richmond community showed up in support, and over $20,000 was raised. All-ACC first team honoree Patrick Nyarko scored both Tech goals in the 3-2 loss to the USL Division 2 champions.

On Sunday night in Houston, the defending MLS-champion Dynamo welcomed Tech head coach Oliver Weiss for a pre-game ceremony and coin toss at their home match against the Chicago Fire. Although Houston fell by a score of 1-0, the Dynamo organization raised $17,330.50 for the memorial fund by auctioning off special maroon and orange jerseys that were worn during the game and autographed. Also included in the donation was a significant portion of online ticket sales for Sunday's contest.

A third professional squad - Major League Soccer's D.C. United - is in the process of auctioning off special maroon jerseys that were worn during their match at Columbus last Saturday. Once the online auction (dcunited.com) is said and done, these three fine organizations will have raised over $40,000 for the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund. Virginia Tech and the men's soccer program express their deepest gratitude.
