Hokies drop season-opener at VCU
Dunn saves eight shots
August 31, 2007

Box Score VCU 4, Virginia Tech 0

RICHMOND, Va. - The Virginia Tech men's soccer team opened its regular season with a 4-0 loss to VCU on Friday night in the Nike/Alltel Classic at VCU SportsBackers Stadium.

Tech's sophomore goalkeeper Brendan Dunn made eight saves but the Hokies were out shot 16-9 in the match, surrendering 12 shots on goal to the Rams.

Senior defender Marcus Reed and junior forward Patrick Nyarko managed two shots on goal apiece but were not able to get one past VCU goalkeeper, Andrew Dykstra. Dykstra made four saves for the shutout. Three other Tech players attempted shots but could not produce any scoring chances.

VCU wasted little time in getting the only score it would need, 6:14 into the match. Gerson Dos Santos scored from 10 yards out after retaining possession of a cross by Sven Meusch from the right side of the field that found itself in the middle of the box.

Carlos Herdy led VCU with two goals and Owusu Sekyere was the other Ram with multiple points, one goal and one assist.

Tech resumes play in the VCU Nike/Alltel Classic against Adelphi at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Jerry Massey will provide the play-be-play on hokietv.com.
