Four Hokies named to All-ACC teams
Nyarko selected to conference's first-team for third consecutive year
November 12, 2007

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Four players from the Virginia Tech men's soccer team were selected to all-conference squads on Monday, the Atlantic Coast Conference announced. Junior forward Patrick Nyarko headlines the group with his third straight first-team selection, while senior midfielder Ben Nason and first-year junior Robert Edmans were named to the second team. Defender James Shupp earned a spot on the All-Freshmen team.

Despite being heavily marked throughout the season, Nyarko is tied for fifth in assists in the ACC with seven helpers in 16 matches. The Kumasi, Ghana native is tied for second on the Tech squad with 18 points, including four goals which ties him for the third-most on the team, and the Hokies finished the regular season 3-0-1 when Nyarko scored a goal. Nyarko waited for the bright lights of Tech's first-ever television appearance to put on one of his best peformances of the season at then-No. 23 Tulsa. Nyarko was credited with an assist in Tech's lone goal of the first half, then started Tech's late match two-goal rally by scoring the game-tying goal with just 6:19 remaining. The Hokies finished off the victory with another goal with just 23 seconds left in regulation.

A second-team selection, Edmans is tied for fifth place in the ACC with a team-high seven goals. The 6-6 striker from Essex, England has also posted a team-high 18 points (off seven goals and four assists), which is good enought to tie for sixth place in the conference heading into this weekend's ACC Championship. Edmans posted one of Tech's three multiple-goal performances in one of the biggest matches this season, against then-No. 1 Wake Forest. Edmans tallied two second-half goals off the bench to help the Hokies salvage a 3-3 tie against the Demon Deacons in Tech Soccer Stadium.

Nason and Shupp earned all-conference accolades as mainstays in the Hokie defense. Both helped a defense that yielded 1.15 goals per game and recorded four shutouts against NC State, Appalachian State, VMI, and Richmond. Nason also contributed offensively with four goals (which ties for the third-highest on the team) and two assists for a total of 10 points. Shupp earned his spot on the ACC's All-Freshmen Team by starting 16 of 17 matches and ranking second on the team with 1,412 minutes played.

Tech earned the fourth seed at the ACC Championships, and will face fifth-seeded Maryland at noon on Wednesday in Cary, N.C.'s SAS Soccer Complex.
