BLACKSBURG, Va.- Junior James Gilson, a defender and midfielder for the Virginia Tech men’s soccer team, was selected to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III Second Team. This is the first time Gilson has been recognized for his accomplishments on the field and in the classroom.
The junior from Greenwood Lake, N.Y., a business major at Tech, leads the team in scoring, registering six goals, posting four assists to total 16 points this season. Gilson has started in all 16 matches, while posting a team-high 33 shots and clocking 1,403 minutes for Tech.
To be nominated, the student-athlete must be a starter or important reserve with at least a 3.30 cumulative grade point average (on a 4.0 scale) for his/her career. A student-athlete is not eligible until he/she has reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution. In the cases of transfers, graduate students and junior college graduates, the athlete must have completed one full academic year at the nominating institution to be eligible.
The Hokies (5-10-1, 0-6-0) will be back in action in Raleigh, N.C. against NC State on Saturday, November 1, at 7 p.m.
