BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech men’s soccer team fell defeated the Davidson Wildcats (5-1-1) 2-1 Tuesday night at Thompson Field. Freshman Kristo Strickler’s goal in the 81st minute broke a deadlock, sending Tech to 3-4 on the season ahead of Friday night’s clash with top-ranked Notre Dame.

The Hokies began on the front foot in the first half aiming seven shots at the Wildcats’ goal. Strickler forced the first save of the game in the eighth minute and Marcelo Acuna was active in the box, attempting a bicycle kick that was blocked and eventually cleared by the defense.

In the 26th minute Elias Tamburini made a run into the penalty area and was taken down, earning a penalty kick. Acuna stepped to the spot and dispatched the spot kick for his team-leading fourth of the season and second penalty.

At the half, the Hokies held their 1-0 advantage.

Davidson found the back of the net through Coleman Richards in the 64th minute. The midfielder picked up a ball on the right side of the field at the top of the box, cut onto his left foot and fired home a goal at the near post.

In the 81st minute, Strickler received a ball from Emil Koho on the right wing where he found himself in some space. Cutting onto his left foot, the freshman from Hilliard, Ohio curled in a shot from the top of the 18-yard box, which proved to be the game winner. It was Strickler’s first career goal in a Tech shirt.

Ben Lundgaard earned the 27th win of his career, after making six saves.

The Hokies kept constant pressure on the backline despite being outshot 12-11 and defended set pieces well, with Davidson earning six in the match.

Tech is back at Thompson Field to host the No. 1 Notre Dame Fighting Irish on Friday, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m. There will be inflatables set up on the practice field for fans pregame, promotional giveaways and as always, admission is free.
