Tech falls to No. 28 Virginia
55th-ranked Hokies fall to 3-2

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech men's tennis team lost a rare home match Wednesday falling 5-2 to 28th-ranked Virginia. The loss was just the Hokies fifth in their last 37 home matches over the past three seasons.
Tech (3-2), ranked No. 55 in the ITA preseason national poll, lost the doubles point and dropped four of the six singles matches in the loss. Virginia improved to 6-0.
The Hokies lost the doubles point but won the No. 3 match as Angel Diankov (Jr., Yonkers, N.Y.)/Morten Schultz (Fr., Bjerringbro, Denmark) won 9-7 over Doug Stewart/Darrin Cohen. Virginia won the No. 2 match 8-2 as Marko Miklo/Stephen Rozek defeated Soren Spanner (So., Strandby, Denmark)/Brent Wilkins (Fr., Richmond, Va.) and clinched the point when Nick Meythaler/Rylan Rizza, ranked 24th in the nation, defeated Andreas Laulund (Sr., Odense, Demark)/Arvid Puranen (Fr., Lulea, Sweden) 8-5.
In singles action, Tech's lone wins occurred at No. 2 as Spanner upset Rozek, ranked No. 62, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0 (4) and in the No. 3 match where Puranen defeated Rizza 6-3, 3-6, 1-0 (3). Laulund lost 6-3, 6-1 in the No. 1 match to Stewart, ranked No. 25, and Diankov fell 6-4, 7-6 (1) at No. 4 against Miklo. Schultz lost 6-4, 6-0 at No. 5 against Meythaler and Wilkins lost 6-2, 6-0 at No. 6 to Cohen.
Tech will look to get back on the winning track on Saturday, Feb. 14 against Middle Tennessee State in a 9 a.m. match at the Burrows/Burleson Tennis Center on the Virginia Tech campus.
