    Virginia Tech Sweeps Both Titles at 2000 Bell Atlantic Atlantic 10 Men's and Women's Tennis Championships
    Hokies Win Fifth-Straight Title

    BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech shutout Temple University, 4-0, in men's tennis and 5-0 in women's tennis to claim its fifth-straight Atlantic 10 Conference championship in both sports today at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center. With the championship victories, both teams will advance to the NCAA Championships on May 12-14.

    In men's action, Tech claimed the doubles point with Davor Dupljak and Saber Kadiri teaming up at No. 1 doubles to defeat Pero Pivcevic and Go Sasaki, 8-0, and Jay Bruner and Eddie Terzimehic defeating Krishane Pillay and Jenson Bascome at No. 3 doubles, 9-8 (7-4). In singles action, Tech's Gerard Baynham defeated Go Sasaki, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2 singles, Bruner defeated Marty Underwood at No. 4 singles, 6-4, 6-2, and Kadiri won at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-1, over Bascome.

    No. 5 St. Bonaventure defeated No. 2 Duquesne, 4-1, to win the consolation round. The Bonnies won the doubles point winning at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, and won three singles matches (No. 1, No. 3, No. 5) to post the victory. Duquesne won at No. 4 singles for their only win of the match.

    In women's action, Tech won No. 1 and Nos. 3-5 singles to claim the victory. Ines Khelifi defeated Tamara Truta 7-6 (7), 6-3 at No. 1 singles, Kristen Stubbs defeated Kathleen Pete, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 3 singles, Antonella Pozzi defeated Tanya Zecic, 6-2, 6-3, at No. 4 singles, Kristin Lanio won at No. 5 singles over Nadia Ramdass, 6-0, 6-0, and Bridget Bruner defeated Nina Kumar, 6-3, 6-0 at No. 6 singles.

    After dropping No. 1 singles and losing two points by default, UMass came from behind capturing No. 2-5 singles and No.1 doubles to win the consolation round of the women's tournament, 5-3.

    Virginia Tech's Davor Dupljak and Ines Khelifi were named tournament's most outstanding players. Dupljak won two singles and a doubles match and Khelifi was 3-0 in singles competition, aiding their teams to championships.

    St. Bonaventure's Villi Nurmi was named the men's rookie of the year and Virginia Tech's Kristen Stubbs and George Washington's Tracey Wei were named women's co-rookies of the year.

    St. Bonaventure Coach Michael Bates was named the men's coach of the year, and Virginia Tech's Anne Jones Thompson was named the women's coach of the year.
