No. 14 Clemson tops No. 49 Hokies
Tech drops another 4-3 heartbreaker
March 31, 2006

CLEMSON, S.C. - Junior Arvid Puranen (Lulea, Sweden) upset 97th-ranked Clement Reix at No. 1 singles, but it was not enough for the 49th-ranked Virginia Tech men's tennis team to upset No. 14 Clemson. The Tigers scored in three of the top four singles matches to earn a 4-3 triumph over the Hokies Friday.

Tech falls to 12-8 overall and 3-3 in the Atlantic Coast Conference, while Clemson improves to 18-5 overall and 3-3 in the conference.

Puranen, the 115th-ranked player in the country, scored Tech's biggest victory of the day, a 4-6, 6-3, 6-3 triumph over Reix at No. 1 singles.

The Hokies also claimed wins at No. 5 and 6 singles. At No. 5, freshman David Rosenfeld (Coral Gables, Fla.) defeated Brett Twente, 6-3, 6-7, 7-6, while freshman Brandon Corace (Naples, Fla.) topped Kevin Fleck, 6-4, 6-2 at No. 6 singles.

Paul Koenke's win over Nicolas Delgado (Madrid, Spain), 6-4, 7-6, earned the clinching point for the Tigers.

Tech earned a win at No. 3 doubles, but could not prevent Clemson from claiming the first point. Sophomore Albert Larregola (Lleida, Spain) and Delgado, earned the Hokies' doubles victory, 9-8 over Twente and Ian Keeler.

Tech will travel to No. 32 Georgia Tech for a noon match on Sunday.
