Puranen falls to Brugues
Tech junior drops first round match

STANFORD, Calif. - Virginia Tech junior Arvid Puranen (Lulea, Sweden) dropped an opening round match to Tulsa's Arnau Brugues, 6-7, 3-6 at the NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championships Wednesday at the Taube Tennis Center.
Puranen, who entered the match as the 50th-ranked singles player in the country, led in the first set 6-5, before falling 7-6. Brugues, who entered the match ranked seventh in the country advanced to the round of 32 with a 6-3 triumph in the second set. Brugues advances to take on Jakub Cech of Fresno State tomorrow afternoon.
Puranen finishes the season with a 20-15 mark as Tech's top singles player. During the conference season he defeated nationally-ranked players in No. 18 Todd Paul (Wake Forest), No. 30 Clement Reix (Clemson), No. 36 Ytai Abougzir (Florida State) and No. 78 Nick Cavaday (NC State).
