Hokies complete Larsen Bowker sweep

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech men's tennis team concluded its opening weekend of the dual-match season in style Sunday, shutting out Charlotte by a score of 7-0 to tally a 4-0 record at the Larsen Bowker Shootout. The Hokies beat UMBC earlier in the day, and Austin Peay and St. Bonaventure on Saturday at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
No. 52 Tech (4-0) jumped out to a 1-0 lead over the 49ers by winning all three of the doubles matches. A pair of 8-3 victories were recorded in the Hokies' favor, as Arvid Purnen/Brandon Corace beat Darren Mansell/Ryan Johnson at No. 1, and Pedro Graber/Nicolas Delgado defeated Felix Bernhoerster/Brad Clinard at No.2. Albert Larregola/Yoann Re handled Roy Sichel/Dorian Host in the No. 3 contest by a score of 8-2.
In singles action, Delgado (So., Madrid Spain) kicked things off for the Hokies at No. 2, knocking off Mansell 6-2, 6-1. Larregola (Jr., Lleida, Spain) earned Tech's third point at No. 3 with a 7-5, 6-1 win over Johnson, and Ignaci Roca (Jr., San Jose, Costa Rica) clinched the match at No. 6 over Ricky Cuellar, 6-4, 6-1.
In the other singles contests, Puranen (Sr., Lulea, Sweden) took care of Sichel (6-4, 6-0), Re (Fr., Verdun, Quebec, Canada) edged Bernhoerster (6-4, 6-3), and Corace (So., Naples, Fla.) squeaked by Clinard (7-5, 3-6, 10-1).
Tech's next action will come on Feb. 3 at Middle Tennessee State.
