Maryland upsets Tech, 4-3
Hokies fall to 7-3

COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Maryland won two, three-set singles matches and a narrow victory in doubles to upset Virginia Tech, 4-3, Saturday afternoon at the Tennis Center at College Park. The Terrapins, ranked No. 73 nationally, improved to 5-0 and 1-0 in the ACC while the Hokies, ranked No. 55, fell to 7-3 and 1-1 in conference action.

Maryland won an extremely tight doubles competition for the first point of the day then the deciding point came down to the No. 4 singles contest. The Terps Scott Fink narrowly defeated Pedro Graber (Fr., Santiago, Chile), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4 to clinch the victory. Tech won three singles matches as Nicolas Delgado (So, Madrid, Spain) defeated David Kwon, 6-4, 6-3, at No. 2, Brandon Corace (So., Naples, Fla.) won at No. 5 with a tight 6-1, 1-6, 6-3, victory over Boris Fetbroyt, and Alexie Sergeev (Sr., Moscow, Russia) defeated Aaron Carr in the No. 6 match, 6-1, 2-6, 6-4.

Maryland's other singles wins were at No. 3 as Nickolai Nielsen defeated Tech's Yoann Re (Fr., Verdun, Quebec), 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, and Andrew Orban won at No. 1 against 39th-ranked Arvid Puranen (Sr., Lulea), 1-0, as Puranen was forced to retire due to illness.

In doubles, the Terps won at No. 3 as Fetbroyt/Kwon def. Corace/Sergeev, 8-3, but the Hokies leveled the competition as 26th-ranked Nicolas Delgado/Graber defeated Fink/Orban, 8-6, at No. 1. The doubles point was decided as L. Lavallee/Nielsen won a tight 9-8 No. 2 match over Tech's Larregola/Re.

Tech returns to action on Sunday, Mar. 4, when the Hokies travel to State College, Pa. for an 11 a.m. match against No. 44 Penn State.
