Tech earns second sweep of the day

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- The Virginia Tech men's tennis team wrapped up a successful outing in Melbourne, Fla., Thursday, by routing St. Bonaventure, 7-0, at the Melbourne Tennis Center. Tech (10-3), ranked No. 33 by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA), defeated Lehigh earlier in the day.
The Hokies opened the match by winning two of the doubles contests, to win the doubles point. In singles action, Arvid Puranen (Sr., Lulea, Sweden), ranked No. 69 nationally, opened up with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Alejandro Nery. Nicolas Delgado (So., Madrid, Spain) earned a second point for the Hokies, notching the win over Diego Valdenegro, 6-3, 6-1. Yoann Re (Fr., Verdun, Quebec, Canada) won over Leo Mochizuki for the second time this season with a score of 6-1, 6-2.
Pedro Graber (Fr., Santiago, Chile) nabbed another point for the Hokies with a 6-1, 6-1 outing over Andrew Hart. Brandon Corace (So., Naples, Fla.) knocked off Jonathan Luce, 6-1, 6-2. In the final match, Ignaci Roca eked by Victor Lecina for the win, 6-3, 5-7, 1-0 (8). The teams elected to use a super tie-breaker in the match instead of a third set since the team outcome had been determined.
In doubles action, Delgado/Graber, ranked No. 21 nationally, opened the match with a win over Nery/Luce, 8-3. Albert Larregola (Jr., Lleida, Spain)/Alexei Sergeev (Sr., Moscow, Russia) gave Tech the doubles point with an 8-1 win over Hart/Dejan Stankovic. Corace/Puranen lost the only match of the day for Tech, falling to Valdenegro/Lecina, 8-6.
Tech returns to action Friday, March 23, with an ACC match-up with Wake Forest in Winston-Salem, N.C. The action starts at 5 p.m.
