Tigers edge Hokies, 4-3, in ACC action
Tech wins the top three singles matches
March 21, 2008

CLEMSON, S.C. - Virginia Tech men's tennis team dropped a 4-3 decision to No. 61 Clemson Friday afternoon at the Hoke Sloan Tennis Center on the Clemson campus. No. 37 Tech fell to 9-4 on the year and 2-2 in the ACC, while Clemson improved to 12-11 (1-3 ACC) with the win.

The Tigers took two of the three doubles matches and three of the six singles contests in the victory.

In doubles, Clemson's Belk/DiFazio defeated Delgado de Robles/Pedro Graber (So., Santiago, Chile), 8-2, in the No. 1 match, which was followed by Alvarez/Fleck's 8-3 win over Corace/Larregola at No. 2 to clinch what would become the decisive point in the contest between the schools. Tech's Jacques/Re defeated Boryachinsiy/Galloway, 8-3, to avoid the sweep in doubles.

Four of the six singles matches went into the third set as both teams earned three points. The Tigers' Ike Belk defeated Sebastien Jacques (Fr., Magog, Quebec, Canada), 6-0, 6-3, in the No. 4 match for the 2-0 lead. Nicolas Delgado de Robles (Jr., Madrid, Spain) kept the Hokies within distance with a 6-4, 6-2 win over Gera Boryachinskiy at No. 2.

However, the next two contests did not go Tech's way as Clemson's Kevin Galloway edged Iganci Roca (Sr., San Jose, Costa Rica), 7-6, 1-6, 6-2 at No. 6 and Derek Difazio defeated Brandon Corace (Jr., Naples, Fla.), 4-6, 6-4, 6-4 at No. 5 for the Tigers' first ACC win of the season.

In other singles action, No. 55 Albert Larregola (Sr., Lleida, Spain) earned a point with a 3-6, 7-6, 6-4 win over Carlos Alvarez at No. 1, and Yoann Re (So., Verdun, Quebec, Canada) won the final contest at No. 3 over Kevin Fleck, 6-7, 6-3, 6-1.

The Hokies continue the weekend roadtrip with a visit to No. 41 Georgia Tech on Saturday. The action is set to begin at 2:30 p.m.
