BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech men's tennis assistant coach Jimmy Borendame has been named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association Mideast Region Assistant Coach of the Year. Borendame is one of eight assistants to receive the honor across the nation. The national winner will be announced on May 20 in Tulsa, Okla., the site of the 2008 NCAA Men's and Women's Championships.

Borendame is in his sixth season as a collegiate coach and fourth as the men's tennis assistant coach at Virginia Tech. He helped the Hokies to a 16-9 season and a trip to the NCAA Championships for the second consecutive season as well as a No. 30 national ranking entering the postseason.

The 28-year-old Borendame played tennis at Butler University in Indianapolis, Ind., where he was ranked 33^rd nationally in doubles and set the school record with 101 career doubles victories. Borendame, a USPTA certified instructor, was selected to coach the 2006 and 2007 Mid-Atlantic National Junior teams, which participated in the national championship in Champaign, Ill.

"I am pleased to see Jimmy receive some recognition for all his hard work and dedication to this program," said Virginia Tech head coach Jim Thompson. "He has worked extremely hard to make our program better and it is great to see that our region recognizes that effort. We have had a very good season and one which I hope we can build on in the future. Jimmy has played a major part in this success and deserves this prestigious award."
